Buying a home is an exciting venture, but there are many things that you need to be aware of before you sign on the dotted lines or move into the home of your dreams. One of the things that you need to check in your new home is the plumbing, because knowing about problems up front will save you a lot of time and money in the future.
Here are 4 items that you should have a professional plumber check in your new home:
- Water Heater: Water heaters can last for at least eight to ten years, but once they get that old they can stop working without notice. A professional can check the water heater for corrosion and any other signs that it needs to be replaced.
- Sewer Line: Sewer lines can cause major problems and if those problems are ignored, the results can be more expensive than you can imagine. We recommend having your sewer line inspected with a camera to see if there are any roots growing inside or any other blockage.
- Water Pressure and Drainage: You probably don’t realize it, but you are going to be fussy about the water pressure that comes out of your showers and sinks. Everyone is, especially when they are taking a shower! If the water pressure is not high enough, it may be because there is an issue with your water lines. Once a professional plumber has tested your water pressure, they will need to flush your toilets and check all your drains to make sure that water is going down properly. The last step will be to check for any leaks in your basement.
- Pipes: We recommend that you have a professional plumber check all your pipes to see how old they are as well as what material they are made of. If you happen to have lead or galvanized pipes and bronze or brass fittings, you will need to have your water tested for lead. If the tests come back with high levels of lead, you will need to have your pipes replaced immediately. This is normally not something that is found in homes nowadays, but if you purchase an older home, it is a possibility.
