4 Options for Unblocking a Blocked Toilet

How often do you need to worry about unblocking your toilet? Hopefully, it is something that you only need to think about once every few months or so, but it definitely is something that you need to know how to take care of when it does happen. A plunger should always be the first line of defense against a blocked toilet.

Here are 4 options for unblocking a blocked toilet:

  1. Plunger: A plunger should be the first tool that you grab for unblocking your toilet and it is quite simple to use. You insert it into your toilet and push it up and down until the blockage has been removed.
  2. Baking Soda and Vinegar: Baking soda and vinegar is normally used to clean around your home, but it can also be used to unblock your toilet. You will add one cup of baking soda to your toilet and let it sit for one minute before slowly adding two cups of vinegar. Allow this mixture to work for a few minutes before flushing the toilet to see if the blockage has cleared.
  3. Plumbing Snake: Not everyone has a plumbing snake, but it is another plumbing tool that we recommend you eventually purchase for your home. To use this tool, you insert the end into your toilet and then turn the handle clockwise. When you begin to feel some resistance, you will want to wind the snake back up. You will notice at that point if the blockage has loosened any, and if it has, you can flush the toilet. If it hasn’t loosened or the toilet doesn’t flush properly, you will have to repeat these steps until the blockage is completely gone.
  4. Wet/Dry Vacuum: This is a unique method for a blocked toilet and while it can be done by a homeowner, we really recommend that it is done by a professional. The reason for this is that one wrong move can mean a complete mess inside of your bathroom. You are basically placing the hose of the vacuum inside your toilet and creating a seal before trying to pull the blockage out.
